Malbec takes over the streets in celebration of its day!
The Embassy of Argentina in New Zealand would like to invite you enjoy with us a magnificent day paying tribute to Argentina’s flagship grape variety.
"Wines of Argentina", the organization responsible for the image of Argentine wine worldwide, is hosting the 3rd edition of Malbec World Day on April 17, 2013.
Throughout the day, Wellington will dress colors and aromas of wine with tastings of some of the greatest Argentine wines at Moore Wilson’s Supermarket on Tory St, from 12:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m
Then, from 08:30 p.m, we will share a night of "Tango and Wine" at the Irish Club (10 Fifeshire Ave.) together with “La Milonga de Ricardo” (Entrance $10), where the Embassy is organizing a wine tasting.
The Embassy thanks the support of Moore Wilson’s and South2South wines of Argentina, sharing the passion for Malbec.
Why April 17?
Malbec was brought from France to our country in 1853 by Michel Aime Pouget, an agronomist who was hired by President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento to run the “Quinta Agronómica de Mendoza”. In order to incorporate new varietals, on April 17 of the same year, a bill was submitted to the Provincial Legislature for the foundation of a Quinta Normal and School of Agriculture.
By the end of 19th century, viticulture experienced an exponential development in the hands of the Italian and French immigrants, and so did Malbec, wich adapted quickly to the varied terroirs and developed even better than in its original land. In this way, over the time and after a lot of hard work, Malbec came to be Argentina’s flagship variety.
To Wines of Argentina, April 17 not only represents the transformation of Argentina’s wine industry, but it is also the starting point for the development of Malbec as the iconic variety.
We invite you, as well, to have a look at this year's promotional video at: http://vimeo.com/61269796 and to visit: http://www.winesofargentina.org/malbecworldday/
